LepreCon 36 is Almost upon us. We’re starting to move things into the hotel and making last minute adjustments to the program. The preliminary online schedule is now somewhat out of date and may get updated if I have time. However, we do have PDFs of the current (not quite final, but almost there) pocket program for you to look at (as of 11:30 pm Wednesday night).
A couple of notes in regards to Downtown Mesa
1. Friday night is 2nd Friday Night Out in downtown Mesa which this month also includes the IMP FEST on MAIN (Independent Music Project FESTival on MAIN St)
There will be street vendors, food, bands, and possibly a closing down of Main Street. To get to the hotel and bypass some of that, turn on 1st Street, one stoplight north of Main St.and head towards Centennial Way. This works for Country Club, Center St., and Mesa Drive.
2. Dining in Downtown Mesa – There are a number of restaurants in downtown Mesa and nearby the htoel. This Downtown Mesa Brochure has information on some of them and other businesses. We will have some printed copies at the convention. Note, however, that the Jack in the Box just south of the hotel has closed down. The Sports Bar across the street from the hotel, Diamond’s Sports Grill is open and has been warned to expect some extra business this weekend.
Programming Schedule! – We now have a LepreCon 36 Preliminary Program Schedule for you to peruse! It is still a work in progress and we are awaiting responses from some of our particpants before they are set in stone. There are also a few more program items to add that we’re wanting to confirm before posting. We will also be scheduling autograph sessions with our main guests and many of the participants.
Masquerade Page is now Live! Details on the LepreCon 36 Masquerade are now live on the website.
Pre-Reg Membership Deadline - We are keeping open the discounted online registration until Sunday, May 9th at 10 pm. After that, memberships will only be available at the door.
Particpant Additions and Subtractions – We’ve had a few participants notify us that they cannot make the convention this year including Ian Tregillis, John Jos. Miller, and Nola Yergen-Jennings. We have a couple of others we’re waiting to hear from on their status. We do have some additions including Michael A. Stackpole and hopefully some others we will be confirming with this weekend.
In regards to Ian Tregillis, The Poisoned Pen is making arrangements to get their copies of Ian’s new book signed and they should be available to order sometime soon.
We’re now less than two weeks out from the convention. We’re working on getting programming finalized and posted to the website in the next few days. If you are coming here due to hearing about the convention elsewhere, please check out the rest of the website to see what all we have going on. We’ve got a couple of announcements to tell you about now:
Charity Auction – We’ve got a lot of neat stuff in the Charity Auction, so please check it out. We have one item in particular that we are very excited about being donated by our Artist Guest of Honor Charles Vess. It is an original painting used for the Neil Gaiman Blueberry Girl picture book (which you can see a video of like the one done for Instructions). Being a special item, it will have a starting bid of $300, but we would like to see if go for much more than that. It is from page 18 in the book, which goes with the text ”Let her tell stories and dance in the rain, somersault, tumble and run,” Proceeds from the auction will be split between the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and City of Hope.
Registration – We have extended the $40 pre-reg rate to Sunday, May 7th if you pay online via PayPal.
As a special incentive for those who are pre-registered, we will be having some programming on Thursday night for pre-registered members only.
At 7:00 pm we will be having a Thursday night edition of the Barry Bard Memorial Movie Previews with movie trailers and movie swag!
At 9:00 pm, we’ll have a special panel with Artist Guest of Honor Charles Vess and Author Guest of Honor George R. R. Martin focusing on the limited edition of George R. R. Martin’s A Storm of Swords that Charles Vess did the art for. The book is no longer available from the publisher, but you’ll have a chance to see the art that Charles did for the book.
Hotel Rooms Still Available
We still have rooms available at the Phoenix Marriott Mesa at the convention rate of $99 S/D/T/Q plus tax. Use the code “leplepa” at their web site or call them at 1-480-898-8300.
The new anthology edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, Warriors, is in the stores now.
A gigantic “event” anthology in the tradition of such landmarks as Robert Silverberg’s LEGENDS and Harlan Ellison’s classic DANGEROUS VISIONS books, WARRIORS features an all-star lineup of award winners and bestsellers from half a dozen different genres. Fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, suspense, western, mainstream, and romance will all be represented, along with a few tales impossible to classify. The lineup includes a new Dunk & Egg novella by yours truly, a FOREVER PEACE sequel from Joe Haldeman, a Lord John novella by Diana Gabaldon, an Emberverse story from S.M. Stirling, a new Roman tale from Steven Saylor, and all sorts of other goodies.
HBO has picked up A Game of Thrones for a full series of ten episodes. The pilot filmed late last year and filming for the series is expected to start this summer with the series airing in 2011. George has been posting occasional updates on his Not a Blog. For a good roundup of information, check out the Wikipedia page on the series.
Today is the day that Drawing Down the Moon – The Art of Charles Vess hits the stores. You can preview the book in full at the Dark Horse web site and you can also read an interview with Charles about the book in the current issue of Realms of Fantasy magazine, available online for free. Charles also has a few posts about the book on his blog at his web site, Green Man Press. We plan to have copies available in the dealers room at LepreCon 36, but you really shouldn’t wait until then to have it in your hands.

Welcome to the new LepreCon 36 Website. We’re working with WordPress to hopefully have an easy to update web site as we get closer to the convention. Updates and news will be posted on this page including news about our guests and the convention.
